Woohoo! Just received the paperback proof for A CATCH IN TIME!

Looks pretty great, but must go through it with a fine-toothed comb. Hopefully it will be ready in time for Santa to drop copies off in lucky readers' stockings.

After a morning of helping mom with yard work, we had an excellent lunch at ERNESTO'S––the one and only right here in Garland, TX.

ERNESTO'S might not have the high-end decor that MI COCINA flaunts, but the Tex-Mex is nonetheless outstanding! A soft cheese taco, beef enchilada, rice and beans for me. Perfect!

Saw ARRIVAL this morning––my first solo theater excursion since being re-implanted as a Dallasite.

I really liked the film, directed by DENIS VILLENEUVE (SICARIO, which I like very, very much) and starring AMY ADAMS, JEREMY RENNER, and FOREST WHITAKER.

It is definitely a thinking-person's sci-fi, and all of the linguistic info and theory is quite fascinating––especially for someone into words and their meanings, like I am. However, the story does take a turn and eventually spirals right into the mysterious vortex of the always confusing time paradox.

Think of it like this: when you're viewing the film, your experience could be currently happening or also might be a memory of it happening, or also might be a memory of it happening in your future. Wait! Well, guess what? It's all three of the above, because past, present, and future are all occurring simultaneously. So if you love or hate the film, don't worry, you already did. Or it's just a memory of you loving or hating it in the future. Wait! Ok, this is getting really confusing.

Nonetheless, ARRIVAL is worth seeing for many reasons and it does make sense in the end. I think. I thought? I will think it does? Schwoooo!...if nothing else, ARRIVAL will give you dinner conversation for some time to come.

Also saw the trailer for A CURE FOR WELLNESS this morning and I have to say it looks very interesting. Some great shots in the trailer. The film is from director GORE VERBINSKI (THE RING, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, etc.) I'll be looking forward to learning more about this one.

THE 6th FLOOR...

53 years ago today, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated here in Dallas while driving through Dealey Plaza, in the West End district of downtown. A very sad day for America. Far worse than this recent election. Nonetheless, the country moved forward and so did Dallas. Back in the mid 70s, my father D.C. Broadstone was a young architect and worked for a firm that was hired to renovate the infamous School Book Depository, where Lee Harvey Oswald purportedly shot JFK from a 6th floor window.

My dad had access to the 6th floor and was able to acquire these original artifacts: an elevator button from the 6th floor and an old book crate that was there.

The School Book Depository was renovated into a county court house and eventually the 6th floor was turned into a museum.

JFK: THE SMOKING GUN (Documentary 2013)

Watched a very good documentary on the JFK's assassination yesterday.
The most sensible and plausible theory I've heard yet.

JFK: THE SMOKING GUN seems to be available in full on YouTube.

So sick of all this election crap. Oops! Did I say an offensive term like "crap"? I meant all this election "fun"! Smiles everyone! Smiles!!!

Nonetheless––in spite of semantics and Electoral College education and relative fraternal hazing––I have so much else to worry about in my life. Very happy to be back in Dallas. It feels right like nothing has felt right in a very long time. Starting over in my life, but I'm feeling strong and motivated. Feeling very James Bond today. Very CASINO ROYALE. Very YOU KNOW MY NAME, one of my fav songs by the outstanding CHRIS CORNELL. Feeling like these lyrics...and I do know the "name" these lyrics speak of, and it's "art" (the art of killing?). For me, my own art--writing, music, filmmaking. And it just might kill me.  I guess time will tell.

Life is gone with just a spin of the wheel
Spin of the wheel
Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you
Are you willing to die?
The coldest blood runs through my veins
You know my name

Well everyone, this is really it.

I woke up with tears in my eyes and feeling very emotional on this chilly early morning. I've always been a person of intense internal conflict and, well, I'm really feeling it now.

It's quiet here in my tiny house at 8am. My longtime friend––and packing helper––Rick is showering. I can hear the distant traffic on the 60 freeway. And I know I won't be sitting at this desk anymore––not ever in this way and in this space in time––until it's come apart and is reassembled in a very different place. The same is true of my life in almost ever way I can think of. Except for one thing. After 21 years, I'm finally going back home.

It's been a very, very long journey since I arrived in 1995. Many horrible things have happened. But many great things, also. I was 90% a musician back then, although always a writer in one way or another. But my music was shot out from under me and I was sent stumbling down a path I had not expected––at least not expected so suddenly. I met many people I never would have crossed paths with had I not come to L.A. Many people that made L.A. bearable. Many good people that influenced me and my art––because I was forced out of music and into filmmaking, and deeper into writing: Rodney Montague, Christopher Webster, John Franklin, David White, Tony Simmons, Lora Cunningham, Gabriel Sigal, Lee Bailes, Matthew Sanderson, Judith Herdman, Joseph Molgaard, Mary Monzon, Starrla Doods, Terry West, Vitina Molgaard, Zachary Walters, Danilo Montejo, Lily Red (Mashkova), and so many others I can't list them all––so many who became such amazing contributors to my art and my life, in so many ways, here in Hollywood.

I love all of you. And I've even come to love L.A. in some strange way. There were two places I always said I never wanted to live, New York City and Los Angeles––especially Los Angeles. But here I landed just the same. It battered me. It tore me apart. It changed me. It made me who I am today. Definitely a bit broken and certainly scarred, but a far superior artist in music, words, film, and thinking––maybe a much greater danger in that latter department (lol). I hope I can return to Dallas and live up to all of the hell and high water I've been through. It's time for me to really shine in this world. I'm not arrogant, but I am damn good at the things I do––music, writing, and film. And the world needs to start paying some attention.

Goodbye L.A.––you goddamn merciless bitch––I take you away as a new part of me. And I take all of those I met here with me too (and for that I'm grateful). I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will be a new era––one I well earned––and it will be my time to make all I've learned, and all those I've met, become undying stars in my new night sky, that will shine light on me and my art forever.

HOLLYWOOD GOODBYE!

Enjoy my last visit up to Hollywood before I leave for Dallas. It was a fine event with my very longtime friend RICK WILDRIDGE, who flew into L.A. this last week to enjoy the glamorous life of a musician, writer, and filmmaker of La-La Land!

Enjoy the HOLLYWOOD GOODBYE video here

One more loose end tied up! And a huge (and very expensive) part of my life here in L.A.

The SCREAM FOR ME negative: A-roll, B-roll, C-roll, and Optical Negative are all back in my personal hands after spending the last decade in the Fotokem climate-controlled vault in Burbank. Retrieved from Fotokem Will Call today. Hope all the elements make it safely back to Dallas and again into proper storage. As well as the included 2 16mm prints and inter-positive.
