BUT FIRST...

http://www.biography.com/news/edgar-allan-poe-horror-stories-facts

EDGAR ALLAN POE has always been a notorious literary and historical figure.  But it's come to light over the last decades that maybe he wasn't such a depressed and inebriated character as his legend has suggested; a legend which he often perpetuated to bolster his own mythical status while alive.  Enjoy the article below that expounds on the real Poe, as well as the real-life origin of some of his greatest tales.

12 TRUE STORIES BEHIND EDGAR ALLAN POE'S TERROR:
"Regrettably, the focus on Poe as counter-culture hero, cautionary example of the dangers of substance abuse, and grandfather of Goth may have obscured the reality of this immensely talented and versatile author. This was true even during his lifetime when the controversial editor and critic appeared as a character in other authors’ novels, poems, and short stories, blurring the line between Poe’s legend and his real life. Poe actively promoted his own legend by spreading rumors that he had fought in the Greek War of Independence and was held prisoner in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Poe’s reputation has kept him in the public eye, but it has also obscured the true significance..."

Poe As A Pop-Cult Hero

From BIOGRAPHY.com:
"Almost everyone knows Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). No other 19-century author is as omnipresent in today’s pop culture. He has guest starred on the animated series Southpark and The Simpsons. His face graces the cover of a Beatles album, he has fought crime alongside Batman in the comic series Batman Nevermore (2003) and hunted a serial killer in the film The Raven (2012). Among the many films featuring Poe as a character are The Raven (1915), The Loves of Edgar Allan Poe (1942), The Man with a Cloak (1951), Castle of Blood (1964), and The Spectre of Edgar Allan Poe (1974). Every Halloween season, Poe impersonators portray him at libraries, theaters, and graveyards around the globe. His legions of fans wear his instantly recognizable face on T-shirts, jewelry, and tattoos."

One of the most recent films capitalizing on Poe as a character in his own right, is the film THE RAVEN (2012) starring JOHN CUSACK  portraying the master of the macabre himself.  In this cinematic homage and exploration, we find Poe chasing down a serial killer during his own time.

MOVIE UPDATE!

HUMAN NO MORE
(The Feature Film)
Starring TONY SIMMONS and GABRIEL SIGAL!

SHWOO! The last three weeks have been slow going for post-production thanks to quite a bit of digital content creation, which then had to be composited into edited production content, which also required other digital design and compositing work, along with a tremendous amount of audio cleanup, editing, and sound-design. But all is going very well. So three weeks work and only 7 minutes of film. lol BUT I LIKE THE RESULTS!

In moving forward––this morning I began reviewing the coverage shot for the big monologue performed by actor GABRIEL SIGAL as The Mirror Murders Killer. This was an extremely tense section to shoot (October 2018) due to much action-follow with camera and the need to grab an emotionally charged performance from Gabriel––while he delivered three pages of written monologue. And...it seems...

We got it! Gabriel met the challenge of words-words-words while emoting with subtlety interspersed with high-octane in-your-face energy.

As director/shot-designer and now editor, I originally hoped and currently believe, I'll be able to proceed as planned and put the sequence together with minimal cutting between angles. I want Gabriel to be the gem of this segment and not constant shot-change editing work. I say let the actor fill the screen and be the element that drives the story forward here. The performance of a three page monologue is not for a faint-of-heart actor, but Gabriel Sigal shines as the balls-to-the-wall performer that he is! Great job, Mr. Sigal!

Enjoy some raw stills (not color-graded) from production.

 LOST SOUL:
THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY'S
ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU

 Streaming On AMAZON PRIME:

Available On DVD:

If nothing has cured you of wanting to be a filmmaker, this excellent documentary chronicling the making of one of the worst films to eke its way out of Hollywood just might. LOST SOUL: THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY'S ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU is something to see––a true cinematic horror tale of exponential egos, mercurial maniacs, money grubbing back stabbers, and sheer insanity.  It's a train wreck in slow motion that you can't take your eyes off of. If you love film, or have made a few small ones, as I have, you'll love this one. Although you might run away screaming into the mountains in the end –– as the original director of...never mind. Give it a watch.

Watch The LOST SOUL Trailer here:

A blow-by-blow account of one of cinema's most celebrated train wrecks.

"One of the all-time greatest cinematic train wrecks is given blow-by-blow chronicling in “Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau.” The creation of the H.G. Wells’ story’s third official screen incarnation was beset by disasters even more bizarre than the delirious mess of a feature finally released in 1996, with stars Marlon Brando and Val Kilmer reportedly rivaling even Mother Nature as destructive on-set forces. Though not so imaginatively packaged as another recent unmaking-of docu, “Jodorowsky’s Dune,” David Gregory’s pic can hardly help but fascinate with its mix of archival materials and surviving-collaborator testimonies. A hit at genre fests, the pic should do well in specialized cable sales and home formats..."
