I wasn’t sure what I was going to think about “Tigers Are Not Afraid”, but I was surprisingly blown away. The film is not complex, yet it is extremely complex by way of its simplicity. The layers of emotional depth that resonate throughout are, in the end, profound and very moving. I was not expecting “Tigers” to touch my heart the way it did. The film has an immense soul that slowly wells up through the tragic lives of the cast of orphaned children, but is conveyed without sentimental tropes.

“Tigers” is a grim fantasy filtered through complete realism; or is it the realism that is filtered through complete fantasy? Either way, “Tigers” is honest. It tells the tale of the very real horrors faced by children living in a world overrun and manipulated by criminal cartels south of the American border. It is about how these lost kids deal with the debilitating hand life has dealt them––though not by running away, but by standing up and biting back. This is why “Tigers Are Not Afraid”. And this is why this dark, macabre tragedy will shock you by putting a tear in your eye as the credits roll. Highly recommended. Watch it. :)
